The Seaview go top as the Stevens have their fingers on the pulse versus the Doctors
Result: SVOB won by 2 wickets
Team: Mark, Ed, Damian, Dickon, New Dave, Stuart, Bobby, Liam, Russell, Cake, Will
This was an eagerly awaited contest in the Mining League South with a lot at stake for the Old Boys.
The team of doctors, that is Methigion, probably arrived at the Hine Downing Oval anticipating defeat at the hands of the SVOB who are the form team, having won their last five in all competitions. Confidence was high amongst the Old Boys as they had soundly beaten the doctors in the away fixture earlier in the season.
First to arrive at the ground, chauffeur driven by me, was Bobby (recently released from hospital after his stag do) and Nicray (recently released from the Australian detention centre after his brush with the authorities). Following on from his surprise and successful appearance in the previous day’s match, Nicray sat this one out, supporting his team loyally from the pavilion. New Paul, a late arrival from Glasto and thus not able to make the team, provided much needed assistance to the scorer by operating that new-fangled electronic scoreboard.
Whilst the result was as expected, a win for the Seaview, it was by no means a stroll on the park as Methigion played excellently and had the SVOB worried.
The doctors batted first and surprised everyone with their free scoring. The openers, Bebb and Van Lingen, reached 32 and 31 respectively, before being retired not out – a fine start for the away team. Wickets finally came when, in the eleventh over, Will struck twice to dismiss Stableforth (bowled) and French-Constant (caught behind by Mark).
With that breakthrough the home team thought things would get easier but Gripper (12) and Danuka (22 not out) had other ideas, pushing the score along to 105 when the next two wickets fell in the eighteenth courtesy of Cake who dismissed Gripper, caught behind, and Edwards, clean bowled first ball. Another ten runs followed before Cake took their fifth wicket with the last ball of the innings when Blake was comfortably caught by Dickon.
Methigion finished on 115 for 5 in their 20 overs, an innings which benefited from generous fielding by the Old Boys.
Back to the positives, the bowling figures were (all four overs): Bobby – 1 maiden, 0-17; Damo 0-23; Dickon 0-22; Will 2-24; Cake 3-24.
In reply the SVOB opened with Mark and Ed. Mark batted superbly and went on to make a total of 37, he initially retired on 31, before being allowed back in to score the winning runs at the end, after the rest of the team, except Damo and Cake, had been dismissed.
Damo scored a beautiful 30 before his enforced retirement and, apart from twelve from Dickon, the middle order collapsed. Cake’s cameo performance of 9 not out, batting at ten, including a splendid six, helped win the game when things looked decidedly uncertain. He and Mark took the SVOB over the line and the team finished with a total of 116 for 8 from 18.1 overs. Cake had a good day at the office, three wickets and nine priceless runs.
This was a fantastic result as it put the SVOB at the top of the Mining League South table, a point above Falmouth.
There are two matches remaining in this league: Falmouth on Monday 3rd July at the Hine Downing Oval and Perranarworthal (away) on Tuesday 4th July. Win or lose we have surpassed everyone’s expectations – come along on and join in.
